Sara T: I am currently doing my best to figure this out. If it were not for the will and power the “self brings” I would have no need to do anything here on this earth. Just be. But we did not come to just be. We came at this time to help make a better world. If we do not honor ourselves and the power that emanates from us, how are we to effect anything?
Being ruled by ego is not good of course, but forgive me because if I had no ego, I would have no desire to better this world. It is me.
Bearji: Yes, and you can be just you; however your heart feels so moved to be, discover YOUR freedom, then see what appears… Following a call from within will always lead you right where you need to be. This is trusting Love.
That moment may be just what’s right to call you deeper into helping others and the world become a better place, or what’s just right to send you deeper into the forests where the Mystics live.
There is only one right answer for any question like this one. That is to wake up spiritually. After that, have no fear you will ‘Be’ just how you are meant to be with no or little effort.
This is such a powerful question. There is a lot to unfold here. I love this question! This makes my heart smile…
This question leads all the way to a core where no questions can be asked or answered as it is already Truth Itself. The answer becomes making a choiceless choice, but this is about you finding what is the choiceless core which is individual only to you and to be discovered by you alone. This all knowing Love is uncovered first by your deeper investigation. Always ask yourself, ‘what is under my thoughts, what is under all these feelings?’
This question leads to awakening, living in the present moment and the answer of how to live in this world as an awakened modern day Mystic. Choices? You bet!
This is something all conscious spiritual beings face when they see and feel the suffering of others in what appears to be nations at war, the planet changing rapidly in response to pollution and consumerism, and the neglect of so many for the greed of so very few. The Tao speaks of being and living in balance. Does the top 1% richest people in the United States havings as much money as the bottom 90% combined sound balanced?
Most all my Buddhist masters told me to be still, live in solitude deep in the still forests, that this is the best thing I could do for humanity. I was to only focus on my own Buddhahood as to become a fully enlightened Buddha who would then change this world or another within a another lifetime or two.
Upon my own spontaneous awakening in 1994, my teacher, Gangaji, told me the same thing her teacher, Papaji, had told her. That was to go and speak the Truth of Being to all who will listen.
My choice had already been burned into my soul expression for this lifetime as at age 15 I had a mystical experience which showed me if all of humanity could have this same experience, there would be peace on earth. My unknown mission started in that moment.
At first, I put Satsang into everything I did, which at the time, I was making a livelihood as a therapist/healer in private practice. I also volunteered for two non-profit organizations and gave back to my community by offering weekly 90-minute focus groups for young men for over five years for free. One of the non-profits was a global organization with a mission to help create peace on earth, whose director was my best friend. This work ranged from true international conflict resolution to training our youth in the interconnectedness of all things, the planet, and people no matter race, color, gender or religion.
Yet, for me, this didn’t feel like enough. I wrote a book, left everything behind and lived out of a vehicle touring, speaking, teaching to as many who were willing to listen. I tell this story as I ended up pushing myself too hard and started longing just to be still.
Then after over ten years living in the forests of the ancient giant redwoods of California, I felt a stirring within again to come out of the woodwork. Soon after that, I found myself sitting with yet another Tibetan Buddist Master. We hadn’t spoken a word. He was just meeting all the students for the first time by walking up and down the aisles glancing into everyone eyes. He glanced at mine, then backed up and looked deeply into them smiling from ear to ear.
Speaking through an interpreter, they whispered to each other and then to me, asking me what I was doing sitting with all the other students, why wasn’t I out teaching? The old Lama pointing to the chair, his chair on the platform. I smiled back, and so he whispers again to his Tibetan companion and then as the interpreter is whispering in my ear, I understand he is telling me to get up right now and go out and teach. I look up to see this jolly old Lama wagging his finger at me to stop being a student! We both broke out in spontaneous uproarious laughter breaking the otherwise silence of the Zen meditation hall.
Sometimes I recognize the simplest winks from the universe, other times, it takes a Buddha to wag his finger at me and laugh! (LOL)
The teaching here is to make your own choice from what is the choiceless choice in the core of your heart. But remember to find balance. And… laugh!
We all don’t have to run all over the country speaking to whoever will listen. Being the compassionate mother and teaching just your own children compassion and loving kindness will change the world faster than any religion or any path that I can think of…
I choose to be aware as best I can to what’s going on in the world. Awareness is easy and is free. Ask me what I think about local, regional, national, or international news, and I’ll point to the truth with my heart of a loving guru… AND I will also be reactive to those who remain willfully ignorant to the truth because their ego won’t let them. Foreign policy with Syria, Iran, North Korea, China, Russia??? Ask me!
Drug addiction, crime, organized crime, criminal justice systems including prisons, law and order, the homeless, violence against women, education, healthcare, welfare, gun control, Medicaid, the elderly… You name it; I find it easy for me to be aware of all of this. I can’t help it. All I have to do is take a small peak, and I see it all as one thing as a grid of energies all connected. I see how it all relates, yet I keep my eye on the swift currents of change these days.
How I answer peoples questions depends on who is doing the asking. As I will tell one person to just be still, while I may tell another to act. But no matter who asks, the answer will not be complete until I remind you to find out for yourself, in your own heart. And… to Awaken that heart, to the One Heart. Then all seeing, all knowing, all action or non-action will serve as right action.
The reason I shared about part of my life? Is to live and lead by example, as there are different lessons for whoever reads this. To be fearless also in the invitation and opportunity for me to learn and offer support where I can.
I’ll finish with a few more quotes of living a life of a modern day Mystic and answer more questions in part two. hen I will post from the Tao Te Ching about balance.
CB: What I find is that without a should-er attempting to steer my actions, they still flow. They have an impetus and a life of their own. “We came here to make this a better world.” Are you certain about this? What’s your evidence? I’m willing to be convinced. Show my why I should believe this.
IT: Yes agree [with] CB, does the world need to be a better place? In whose eyes?
Bearji: An example I have used in the past is to remind us all how when flying on a plane the instructions in case of an emergency is to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before even your children.
Zen may say something like, “I would love to have something to offer you for this, but in Zen, there is nothing to offer.”
Others may say, “It doesn’t matter what is happening in the manifest world as it is all an illusion, simply be still and elevate your own consciousness as to elevate all others.”
I jumped all over someone last week who gave me this answer. I reacted. And I didn’t apologize for it. I told this FB friend not to take it personally and that I responded the way I did because even though this may be what works for him, for the 7 Billion rest of us who see the world currently in crisis and the future threatened, it does matter. Especially if you have children!
He argued the point that our actions and attempts to change the world were just feeding the fear that creates the chaos forever spinning off into the future.
Indeed, I replied. This is why some take action to teach Love, compassion and loving kindness through awakening to our interconnectedness of all things and beings. And I agreed none of it really matters, and thus, it also doesn’t matter if our healing hearts offer help to heal and awaken others. It is truly a choice.
Discover the Freedom of your own Heart.
But… (LOL – Here comes the fun!) I am always telling everyone to investigate, investigate, investigate. So let’s take apart the questions and comments and put it all back together, and you can make your own choices.
ST, when you say, “I am currently doing my best to figure this out. If it were not for the will and power the “self brings” I would have no need to do anything here on this earth. Just be.”
YES! This is the point of spiritual awakening. “BEING.” Being in the absolute present moment free of mind, yet acutely aware of Heart and thus the Heart of all experience of comings and goings. This is Freedom.
Imagine you have this Freedom of Being. Close your eyes right now and exhale into a relaxed state of being. Taking your awareness into your heart center, imagine you have an abundance, all your survival needs are met, you have all the comfort you could ever want, your health is excellent, body strong, sensual and you enjoy all its pleasures… you have no needs for anything and absolutely no responsibilities. Now ask yourself, what would you do with your time? What would your deepest heart knowing do with this Love which is discovered under all thoughts and desires? How is life and this love to be expressed that is YOU?
I teach to heal by investigating how your ego is sabotaging your life’s best intentions. Then to transcend the egos beliefs by stopping the mind for an instant in Not Knowing. This is what I teach because this is my direct personal experience. This is the only thing to “figure out.”
And until this is figured out and practiced, the “will and power that self brings,” will continue. This is the pure intelligence and force of Karma.
Ask yourself, what is the highest intention at the heart of Karma?
Balance, learning lessons, paying back debt from past lives, earning merits for future ones… Let’s just call it what it is, the intention of Karma is purification.
The intelligence, power, and force which created the manifest universe out of empty consciousness appears out of nothingness with a purification fire of endless awakening to the true nature of Love.
Love is the one word all Mystics use when reflecting the Nature of Heart. The One Heart.
Love Itself is a constant Self-expanding purifying expression, no matter how it appears. This is Grace. Grace leads Itself into more Grace.
It is easy to see this seed which has grown into hearts all over this world in crisis, which sparks alive a creative and burning desire for change?
ST stated, “We came at this time to help make a better world. If we do not honor ourselves and the power that emanates from us, how are we to effect anything? Being ruled by ego is not good of course, but forgive me because if I had no ego, I would have no desire to better this world. It is me.”
That is right! “It is me.”
At age four I had my first mystical experience. I knew ‘I was here’ to leave the world a better place. And as I am now sitting and typing in this moment in my small cottage, my choice to simply “be” could be either just sit in silence, answer this question or watch game shows on TV. I could put effort into anything or nothing. But the Love in the stillness within my Heart moves with an unmoving compassion for all others who seek an end to their suffering. I gave my life to the call of Truth to be used however Truth Itself, Love Itself, wants to use me. I surrendered completely. Also meaning I surrender to the ‘game show’ of all which is my Life.
My life situations and circumstances have many challenges, my body is bound with limitations, but my heart is free. My mind would love to fear the world, but instead, I smile and enjoy my love to laugh. The black-hole I call my check book swallows up all the universe provides and then some, yet all change is welcome with an adventurous Heart. What to do? Worry or not worry? Suffer or not suffer? What is that which is my deepest Heart intention, that which best serves my awakening. That which serves Love and the mission of my Heart awakening.
Options: Be still, live in the forest as a hermit. [The outside showers are murder] Be still and live as a monk who owns a car, lives in a cottage with hot and cold running water. [Much better] Be still and live as a spiritual teacher for other like minded people. Be still and live as whatever Love calls you deeper into your own heart. Be still and let whatever comes, and whatever doesn’t come, what goes, what stays, with complete acceptance. Live simple and hold the heart knowing and awareness of the Stillness which is at the core of all comings and goings… This is freedom. (In the mountain forests or a cottage with power and water.)
CB is on the right track… for CB. Right, everyone? Yet, there is much that CB offers us all here. When there is no ego trying to control, actions do still flow. This is the Heart intuition moving from the Love at the core of what is the One Heart.
The higher Intelligence of Karma is always working. This Heart of CB will be used with the same purity as all pure hearts. There is no right or wrong. This is the evidence revealed when one drops all beliefs.
And so to answer IT, IT: “does the world need to be a better place? In whose eyes?”
Your eyes, dear one. What do you see, what is it you feel, where is your heart drawn, how will your Love be expressed? The answer is your eyes.
We are all thirsty for the same water. We are born knowing we need to drink. Drink until you are Ocean. When you are Ocean how could you be thirsty? Discover yourself as Ocean by being Still. Not know what ego believes for an instant. Realize Self as all Love. And witness the waves of compassion and loving kindness coming off of you as natural and effortless as Love Loving Itself.
It is here and right now. There is a total shift of perception upon awakening. Awakening happens spontaneously in an instant of not knowing, in letting go of all ego beliefs. In Oneness, there is only Self. Love/Self is either still or can act out of compassion and loving kindness. This is Grace.
There is nowhere to go, all eternity to get there, and yet there is no need to wait. We see the fruits of waiting reflected in the chaos around the world today.
The planet is a living being; it will shake, burn, freeze, flood, dry, blow apart, crack and starve even itself. As we see the earth respond to the ignorance of its inhabitants who continue to pollute the whole of our atmospheric environment as climate change. Karma is not only for individual people, it also works for Nations of people and the entire Being as the planet earth. Never doubt the force of creation. Grace can also scratch off the itchy bloodsuckers and lick her wounds. Just like my cat.
Be Still. Awaken to Love. Be a witness or a spiritual warrior. My song is for Peace on Earth. Does it matter? No. Does it matter if I let it matter? No.
Be Love and then choose. Love and only Love has this choice to make. Certainly not thinking, and absolutely not from believing.

“I’m a student of history and know that civilizations get lost – they are born and die – and so I recognize the tender mortality of our civilization. I’m not saying I’m separate from the despair of that, but I’m not controlled by the despair of that.” ~Gangaji
“There is a desire deep within the soul which drives man from the seen to the unseen, to philosophy and to the Devine.” ~Kahlil Gibran
“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” ~Dalai Lama
Here is something from the Tao that will speak to us all.
If you want to be a great leader, you must learn to follow the Tao. Stop trying to control. Let go of fix plans and concepts, and the world will govern itself.
The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be. The more weapons you have, the less secure people will be. The more subsidies you have, the less self-reliant people will be.
Therefore the master says: I let go of the law, and people become honest. I let go of economics, and people become prosperous. I let go of religion, and people become serene. I let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.
If a country is governed with tolerance, the people are comfortable and honest. If a country is governed with repression, the people are depressed and crafty.
When the will to power is in charge, the higher the ideals, the lower the results. Try to make people happy, and you lay the groundwork for misery. Try to make people moral, and you lay the ground work for vice.
Thus the Masters is content to serve as an example and not to impose her will. She is pointed, but doesn’t pierce. Straightforward, but supple. Radiant, but easy on the eyes.
For governing the country well, there is nothing better than moderation.
The mark of a moderate man is freedom from his own ideas. Tolerant like the sky, all pervading like sunlight, firm like a mountain, supple like a tree in the wind, he has no destination in view and makes use of anything life happens to bring his way.
Nothing is impossible for him. Because he has let go, he can care for the people’s welfare as a mother cares for her child.
Center your country in the Tao and evil will have no power. Not that it isn’t there, but you’ll be able to step out of its way. Give evil nothing to oppose, and it will disappear by itself.
When a country obtained great power, it becomes like to sea; all streams run downward into it. The more powerful it grows, the greater the need for humility. Humility means trusting the Tao, thus never needing to be defensive.
A great nation is like a great man: When he makes a mistake, he realizes it. Having realized it, he admits it. Having admitted it, he corrects it. He considers those who point out his faults as his most benevolent teachers. He thinks of his enemy as the shadow that he himself casts.
If a nation is centered in the Tao, if it nourishes its own people and doesn’t medal in the affairs of others, it will be a light all nations in the world.
The Tao is the center of the universe, a good man’s treasure, the bad man’s refuge.
Honors can be bought with fine words, respect can be won with good deeds; but the Tao is beyond all value, and no one can achieve it.
Thus, when a new leader is chosen, don’t offer to help him with your wealth or your expertise. Offer instead to teach him about the Tao.
Why did the ancient Masters esteem the Tao? Because, being one with the Tao, when you seek, you find; and when you make a mistake, you are forgiven. That is why everybody loves it.
Act without doing; work without effort. Think of the small as large and the few as many. Confront the difficult while it is still easy; accomplished the great task by a series of small acts.
The Master never reaches for the great; thus she achieves greatness. When she runs into a difficulty, she stops and gives herself to it. She doesn’t cling to her own comfort; those problems are no problem for her.
